In this business case study, remote moderated contextual inquiry and remote moderated usability research are deployed in a multi-phased approach in order to define and shape the vision for a suite of proprietary software products at NPD Group, a global provider of sales and marketing information. Entailing a variety of thematic research areas over a several year engagement, this case demonstrates the power and flexibility of remote methods when conducting research with communities of business users. Social facilitation theory states that a person’s performance is affected when being observed. Aspects of usability testing were studied to determine the impact of social facilitation. Subjects were run through a usability test varying the amount of observation. Statistically significant effects were found in the number of errors made. (237)

We compare two notations used for user interface design, namely functional flow diagrams, currently widely used by the usability design community, and task models, which are not as popular. We show that the increased coverage provided by task models can have beneficial effects on the design of user-computer interaction. (172)
