Marshfield Clinic is the largest private group medical practice in Wisconsin, and one of the largest in the United States. Its mission is to serve patients through high-quality, accessible healthcare, research and education. The Clinic also has an impressive track record in applied clinical informatics. Its internally-developed Electronic Health Record (EHR) is one of the oldest and most comprehensive in the country, containing coded diagnoses data back to 1960, with other coded data and digital documents back to the mid-1980s. Marshfield Clinic provides a unique environment for informatics research.
The Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation (MCRF) employs approximately 200 researchers and staff. It has research centers in clinical research, rural health and safety, epidemiology, human genetics, and biomedical informatics. The Biomedical Informatics Research Center (BIRC) was founded in 2005 and currently has over 40 scientists and staff. Research at the BIRC focuses on informatics applied to practical clinical and research problems. Current areas of focus include: Knowledge Management, Decision Support, Human Computer Interaction, Translational Informatics, Dental Informatics and Genome/Phenome studies.
Marshfield Clinic has an extensive collaborative relationship with University of Wisconsin Madison, which has designated Marshfield Clinic as an Academic Campus of UW School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH). Many Marshfield Clinic researchers and clinicians hold appointments at UW. The Marshfield Clinic is also a partner with UWSMPH and four other UW Madison schools in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, which is primarily funded by the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award program.
The Human Computer Interaction Research and Usability Testing Manager will be responsible for contributing to human computer interaction research and usability evaluations within the Biomedical Informatics Research Center (BIRC). The ICDI manager will work closely with researchers within Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation and cross-functionally with other Clinic staff from Information Systems and Corporate Communications to develop short and long-term usability research programs. The ICDI manager will be responsible for proposing projects, creating research plans, methods and conducting analyses of research studies and operations of the usability testing lab within BIRC. This will include collection and analysis of data from usability testing, eye tracking, interviews, focus groups, ethnographic studies, electronic surveys, time-motion studies and other data collection methods.
Requires a PhD in Psychology, Biomedical Informatics, Information Science, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Ergonomics or a related field required. At least two years of research experience in at least one domain of HCI research (including dissertation preparation) required. Experience in HCI research and usability testing, preferably in a clinical domain required. Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out research experiments and projects is required. Publication record of original research in peer-reviewed sources or proprietary research for a corporation is expected.

The Consumer Health Informatics Fellowship in Healthcare Innovation and User Experience Design is a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Interactive Clinical Design Institute funded by a donation from Security Health Plan. The postdoctoral fellow will report to the Director of the Biomedical Informatics Research Center (BIRC) and will be jointly mentored by the Chief User Experience Designer of Marshfield Clinic.
The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for contributing to the research activities at BIRC. The fellow will both contribute to ongoing research projects, as well as propose research projects that will be suitable for external funding.
This position is expected to: publish research results in leading peer-reviewed journals and books; collaborate and consult with other Foundation scientists and Marshfield clinician investigators; contribute expertise in the design, conduct, analysis of a wide range of research; participate in Center, Foundation, and national scientific duties, such as presentations at professional conferences, and peer review of research proposals and publications; help to maintain an effective work environment within the Center and Foundation; and promote positive relationships with the communities and patients served by Marshfield Clinic.
Possible research foci could include: Smart Phone and Mobile Healthcare Computing, Patient Portal, Consumer Informatics, Consumer Genomics, Health Literacy, Home Health Monitoring, or similar areas.
This position will have the resources of the Interactive Clinical Design Institute (ICDI) available to them including a state of the art usability and HCI testing laboratory, including: screen/audio/video recording equipment; Tobii T120 and glasses eye tracking equipment; and two observation spaces, with one space dedicated to one-on-one testing and the other as flexible and configurable space to support a variety of research studies. This is a high intensity live clinical setting where design thinking are used to understand the nature of complexity in healthcare, and to track, measure and innovate around the patient and caregiver experience. The postdoctoral fellow will be working along-side some of the brightest medical minds in the country to help them practice better, safer, more patient-centric medicine.
