Crown Design is an award winning, multi-disciplinary design organization, which supports global product development initiatives for Crown Equipment Corporation (www.crown.com). Crown designs, manufactures, distributes, services and supports material handling products, including electric lift, pallet, stacker, walkie, turret, reach, and picking trucks. In September, Fast Company featured Crown in the United States of Design as one of 30 companies that “get it,” and said that Crown is “proving forklifts can be as well designed as iPods."

Crown Design currently has an opening for a Design Researcher who can help us make the invisible visible and translate that insight into differentiating products, services, and interactive experiences. The successful candidate will have responsibility for developing research plans and collaborating with a multi-disciplinary design team to carry out design research and analysis. He/she will develop visualizations and representations of customer and user needs, values, and everyday practice to define and clarify value propositions, design criteria, product features, and new business concepts. ABOUT OUR HFE TEAM
UL-Wiklund R&D works with clients to produce compelling user interfaces and user experiences. Our research activities include observing people interacting with products and systems, and conducting interviews, focus groups, and usability tests with potential users of prototype and production-equivalent devices. Our product and system evaluation work ranges from quick-response product critiques to full-scale, product development and human factors research programs. In addition to conducting user research, we design software and hardware user interfaces and learning aids (e.g., user manuals, quick reference cards). Our work is concentrated in the medical industry, involving research, design, and evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic devices as well as information management systems. Our portfolio includes hemodialysis machines, glucose meters, insulin pumps, heart pumps, blood chemistry analyzers, nerve stimulators, inhalers, defibrillators, X-ray systems, and multiple surgical tools. ABOUT YOU
You should have a degree in human factors, engineering psychology, or a related field. You should be a confident presenter and speaker, and a proficient writer. As part of our team, you will lead user research activities including usability tests, analyze usability test findings, conceptualize design improvements, and prepare authoritative reports and presentations. If user interface design is one of your strengths, you may also become involved in user interface design projects. Knowledge of and proficiency with inferential statistics and experimental design is a plus. You should be a team player and welcome intermittent travel within the USA and abroad (mostly Europe) to meet clients, conduct research, and present project results. You should be a "natural consultant" who possesses diverse technical skills, enjoys meeting new people, feels comfortable multi-tasking, and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

User Experience Interaction Design Manager

In this role, you will lead a team of interaction designers to analyze, design, and user test our web-based and mobile enterprise applications. You will use your experience in user-centered design methodologies and leadership skills to deliver innovative, best-in-class solutions that will drive our next generation of products.

Responsibilities:

· Lead a team of interaction designers responsible for developing the highest quality user interface designs for enterprise and consumer web applications.

· Manage and grow a team of interaction designers, including hiring, and managing the performance and retention of employees. Develop the teams' capabilities and skills through mentoring and training. Create opportunities for growth.

· Manage multiple projects with competing deadlines. Work with your team to set and manage schedules and workloads. Determine and communicate the level of effort and possible trade-offs.

· Work with product management and User Experience management to ensure that all designs that are developed meets users’ needs.

· Provide guidance to the designers by defining design standards for web and mobile applications. Ensure standards are adhered to across the design team.

· Establish processes for performing peer reviews, collaborative design, generation of personas, user task analyses, user flows, wireframes, high fidelity prototypes, etc., and user testing of designs

· Gain a deep and thorough understanding of the products your team is responsible for. Work with the user research team to understand your users and their needs.  Establish a methodology that focuses your team on cross-functional collaboration and a user-centered approach.

Qualifications:

· 3+ years experience managing interaction designers.

· 5+ years experience as a UI designer.

· BS or MS in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors Engineering, or related field.

· Experience managing UI designers across multiple projects.

· Demonstrate ability to prioritize issues, and successfully balance speed and quality to ensure the best user experience.

· A mastery of web standards, user-centered design principles, knowledge of the software development process.

· Articulate design concepts and prototypes, with the ability to define your "vision" for the project in a variety of ways - written, visually and verbally.

· Thorough understanding of the limitations and appropriate uses of web and mobile technologies.

· Proven track record in a fast paced environment.

· Ability to build a strong and collaborative team.

· Strong team player that can build relationships across functions to effectively mediate and resolve issues.

This position requires a Master Degree and 4 years of experience in a relevant field of study (Le. Design Research, Human Factors, Anthropology, Psychology, Human Computer Interaction.) Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and be experienced in planning, managing and conducting rigorous research using both qualitative and quantitative processes and methods, and demonstrate an ability to quickly understand a problem space through organized thinking and communication. Experience in observation, interview techniques, and analysis of qualitative research is required. The incumbent must be an experienced presenter and an excellent communicator.
