Implementing Social Media in Government: Reaching a More Diverse Audience

A case study of a local government agency’s decision-making process to connect with their constituents via social media to reach a more diverse audien

Government organizations around the world are showing great interest in social media, as it offers the promise of gaining much closer and more-immediate contact and interaction with a broader base of citizens and other constituents. Governments could benefit through much richer input and feedback with policy development, through more intimate service delivery, and potentially through greatly enhanced democratic processes. This paper offers the results of a force field analysis of a public agency interested in implementing social media. It also provides specific guidelines for doing so once the agency has made that decision.
