Designing for Social Change

Opening Keynote Presentation

I'm really looking forward to hearing stories from people. Stories about how well the things they have tried to motivate positive social change have worked. As designing for social change is a new, fast-changing and relatively unexplored space, we can all learn a lot from each others' successes and failures.

During my talk, attendees can expect to hear about how different types of inter-personal relationships can lead to very different outcomes in motivating behavioral change, and how this changes in different cultures. I'll share stories about how people we are close to, and people we've never met, did or did not influence us, and stories about how norms learned from people's local culture impact how much they can be influenced. My goal is for the attendees to walk away with concrete ideas for when to engage people's closest friends and family, when to engage knowledge experts and celebrities, and when to engage broad versus narrow audiences, when trying to motivate positive social change.
