Discount Testing by Amateurs: Threat or Menace?

Which is better: usability tests done by amateurs or no tests at all? Given that the vast majority of Web sites can't afford the services of a usability professional, do-it-yourself "discount" testing or no testing may be their only options. Opinions in the profession range from "Anyone can do decent usability testing, and we should be showing them how to harder than people think, and encouraging amateurs is irresponsible."
